早期生活
譚蒂·紐頓生於英國倫敦，母親是辛巴威醫療工作者，父親尼克·紐頓是英國實驗工程師。她的出生地常被誤報為非洲尚比亞，然而在訪談中已證實她出生於倫敦，在她雙親旅行兩週的期間。「譚蒂（Thandiwe）」在部分非洲民族語言意指「摯愛的（beloved）」，發音念法為「Tan-dee」。根據紐頓說法，她的母親是名辛巴威紹納族的公主。 成長於英國倫敦和康沃爾，1992年至1995年就讀於劍橋大學唐寧學院的社會人類學系，以中等成績畢業。
